SHORT DESCRIPTION: Since 2014, the Municipality of Aviano has undertaken a cultural initiative dedicated to enhancing the legacy of the artist Riccardo Piter, a sculptor born in Castel d’Aviano on 10 October 1899 into a family of stonemasons. After fighting in the First World War, he moved to Milan in 1920, where he studied at the atelier of Adolfo Wildt and Castiglioni. He quickly gained public recognition and was often commissioned by the Milanese bourgeoisie to create monumental and public works. Some of his most important works can be found at the Monumental Cemetery of Milan.
Despite his success, Piter always remained closely connected to his homeland. In Aviano, his works include La Dolente for the War Memorial and the bronze sculpture of the Virgin Mary at the entrance to the cemetery of Castel d’Aviano.
In 2015, Piter’s heirs donated to the Municipality of Aviano 57 plaster sculptures, 2 stone works, and 3 works in marble and bronze. These were restored thanks to the support of the Fondazione Friuli and intended for a permanent exhibition. The exhibition was inaugurated on 13 April 2019 and is located on the top floor of the historic Palazzina Ferro.
The modern gipsoteca “La Bottega di Riccardo” is a space dedicated to telling the story of Piter and, through it, preserving the memory and identity of the Aviano area and its stonemason tradition.
